Press Release

The Colony HOTEL and Voltz Clarke Gallery are pleased to present IN THE PINK, a group exhibition.

Love and violence, seduction and innocence, finery and garishness, the masculine and the feminine; the color pink has always represented fascinating contradictions. The color's turbulent history is ushered into the present-day meaning according to Oxford Languages ‘in very good health and spirits’ at The Solarium at The Colony through a selection of works by Christina Burch, Field Kallop, Lucy Soni, Khalilah Birdsong, and Jason Trotter. The selected paintings for IN THE PINK invite viewers this season to experience pink in all its dimensions; from soft, subtle hues to bold, vibrant statements. Abstract geometries engage with familiar florals and flesh tones, showcasing pink's dynamic role in representation. Field Kallop’s sharp forms in shades of dusty rose and coral juxtapose the brilliantly deep magenta peonies in Christina Burch's canvases. Set against the backdrop of Palm Beach's pastel sunsets and plastic flamingos, the Colony Hotel provides the perfect address for this vibrant exhibition.

The Colony Palm Beach | Voltz Clarke Gallery Collaboration invites hotel guests, visitors, and locals alike to explore a rotating selection of fine art at the iconic property steps from Worth Avenue and the Atlantic Ocean. Lucy Soni | Knot Theory

British artist, Lucy Soni is inspired by the idea of control versus chaos. Her compositions start as small scribbles on paper and communicate a sense of urgency. Through tracing, enlarging, repeating, and layering, Soni transfers these forms to large scale canvases. This process produces carefully balanced paintings which unite impulsive markmaking and high art. Soni graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Chelsea College of Art in 1997 and lives and works in London.

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present FLOW, a two-person exhibition featuring new works by artists Bradley Sabin and Lucy Soni.

Both artists fervently explore the intersection of the organic with the constructed; the coordinated and the accidental; hard and soft. Such juxtaposition of medium and subject matter takes on a complimentary effect, emphasizing the ever-moving forces and gentle rhythms that contribute to the flow of everyday life. There will be a Public Opening Reception with the artists on Friday, January 7th, 2022.

An avid gardener and sculptor, Bradley Sabin finds inspiration in his natural surroundings. FLOWS’s program is an extension of his trademark ceramic installations, including new floral shapes and custom glazes inspired by the artist's personal gardening practices in New Orleans.

Unlike other ceramicists, Sabin works within the natural structure of exhibition spaces, tying these architectural environments into his complex and organic installations. It is through these breathtaking wall adornments and stand-alone sculptures that Sabin draws parallels between maintaining a flourishing garden and sustaining organic human relationships. Such a connection emphasizes the level of care and commitment needed to nurture positive outcomes, long-lasting success, and honest beauty-- both in nature and in day to day life.

Bradley Sabin received his Master of Fine Arts in ceramics from Louisiana State University in 1996 after completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He now lives and works in New Orleans, Louisiana.

British artist Lucy Soni lives and works in London, where she produces modern, large-scale paintings that originate from small scribble studies. Her work consistently explores the collision of the natural with the architectural, the revelatory effect of incongruous forms, and art as a conduit for memory.

Interested in the offhand, the accidental, and the compulsive, Soni’s processes play out, equally meticulous, repetitive, and oriented, towards a flat and impeccable surface. Her compositions start as scribbles on paper that communicate a sense of urgency. Through tracing, enlarging, and layering, Soni transfers these forms to canvases on a much larger scale. This process produces carefully balanced paintings which unite impulsive mark-making, popular culture, and high art. “Making art is an attempt to unravel and communicate what can’t always be put into words.” Says Soni. “My paintings are exercises in patience, accuracy and taste, seeking to celebrate color and form, embracing the absurd pursuit of unattainable perfection.”

Lucy Soni was born in Kent in 1973 and lives and works in London. She graduated in 1997 with a BA in Painting from Chelsea College of Art London. Her shows include John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool 2018; Pillow Talk, Uniqlo Tate Lates, Tate Modern, 2018; An Evening of Performances + DRAF 10th Anniversary, KOKO, London, 2017; Mega Hammer, Glasgow International 2016 and Changing Atmospheres, 2021 Hestercombe Art Gallery, Somerset Her work can be found in public and private collections in the UK, Hong Kong and the USA. Soni curates shows independently in her home, an ongoing project entitled Why Don’t You…?HQ, which was included in Art Licks Weekend 2015 - 2019 She also exhibits as part of ‘Blink’ an artist let platform set up in 2021.

KICKSTART | A Group Show

Opening Reception: February 4th, 2021, 2 – 6pm

Gallery Location: 195 Chrystie Street, New York, NY 10002

Hours: Monday – Friday, 10 am–6 pm, Saturday and Sunday by appointment Contact Info: Juliette@voltzclarke.com, 917.292.6921, voltzclarke.com

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present KICKSTART: A Group Show, with Mark Boomershine, Jeff Chester, Katy Ferrarone, Gemma Gené, Jacinto Moros, Stephanie Patton, Lucy Soni, and Jason Trotter.

KICKSTART, a group show, opens Thursday February 4th and celebrates a new year offering fresh opportunities and a positive outlook; “looking forward” rather than “looking back.”

Jeff Chester’s portraits, while crisp and contemporary, exhibit a retro feel. They, as with Mark Boomershine’s diamond dust “disco- ball” circles, take us back to the 1970s. Jacinto Moros’ metallic blue polyurethane resin sculpture and Jason Trotter’s powerful works on paper, picks up this baton and runs with it. Lucy Soni’s new multi-colored tangles echo the complexities of the past year and offer solutions as well as Katy Ferrarone’s abstract canvases. Gemma Gené’s “Yellow” symbolizes the healing powers and energy attributed to mineral rocks and therefore our hopes for the future. Stephanie Patton’s “You” sculpture asks the obvious question.

KICKSTART, a group show, runs through early March and temperatures will be taken upon entering the gallery.

On View: November 29, 2019 through 2020
Location: The Colony Palm Beach, 155 Hammon Avenue, Palm Beach, FL 33480
Opening Reception: November 29th, from 6pm to 8pm

Voltz Clarke Gallery is pleased to present a solo show titled The Quick Slow by Lucy Soni. The collection of paintings consists of Soni’s signature “scribble” paintings in color combinations inspired by and for the gallery at The Colony Palm Beach. The reception, with the artist in attendance, will be held on Friday, November 29th.

Lucy Soni is inspired by the idea of control versus chaos. Her compositions start as small scribbles on paper that communicate a sense of urgency. Through tracing, enlarging, repeating, and layering, Soni transfers these forms to canvases on a much larger scale. This process produces carefully balanced paintings which unite impulsive mark-making and high art.

Soni shares, “For me, making art is an attempt to unravel and communicate what can’t always be put into words.  It is often incredibly challenging.  My paintings are exercises in patience, accuracy and taste, seeking to celebrate colour and form, embracing the absurd pursuit of unattainable perfection.  They are informed by sadness, but attend to the opposite of sad.

Like many people, depression came along when I was a teenager and never really left. I consider myself to be in a sort of depression ‘remission’.  I have ups and downs like anyone else and yes the black dogs can still be heard barking in the distance, but I’m one of the lucky people for whom medication and therapy have worked.

I never wanted my depression to become my identity and so for me, my art has not been a vehicle to talk about or express my depression, not therapy, but a sort of necessity.  In fact I’ve always wanted to actively keep the two separate, perhaps an absurd ambition, as everything we see and think somehow seems to come out in the mix!”

Lucy Soni lives and works in London. Soni graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Painting from Chelsea College of Art in London.

Diane von Furstenberg Gallery, 440 West 14th Street, New York, New York

(New York, NY) On May 19, 2010 Voltz Clarke will present LICKING OUT OF THE SAME BOWL, an exhibition featuring English artists Natasha Law and Lucy Soni. Showing at the new Diane von Furstenberg Gallery, adjacent to her flagship store in the meatpacking district, the exhibition will celebrate new works by both painters. Playing with the idea that both Law and Soni employ a concentration of vivid colors in their respective works, it is as if each is dipping into the same paint bowl. Viewed together, the works celebrate color, form, and, gesture, and yet uphold each painter’s singular and distinctive compositional artistry.

Natasha Law has gained international recognition for her signature female silhouettes. Rendered in a variety of media, including high-gloss paint on aluminum and assembled cut paper, Law’s works observe color, tone, and contrast. She examines the movements of bodies and flesh in space, and the folds and shapes that create forms, figures, and the experience of the body in the world. At once soft and bold, delicate and strong, each work is sensitively delivered and entirely emotive. Educated at Camberwell College of Arts, in London, Law shows with Eleven Fine Art, in London, and through Voltz Clarke, in Manhattan. Voltz Clarke featured Law in the solo show FOLD in 2006.

Lucy Soni examines the dichotomy between mother and child, the yearning of parents to protect and control, and the desire of the trained artist to manage the naïve. Moved by her infant daughter’s crayon scribbles, Soni first began incorporating unlearned marks into abstract colored pencil drawings. Over the course of two years, these drawings developed into large-scale oil canvases, which were highlighted by Voltz Clarke in December of 2005. That group show, LONDON BRIDGES, also included works by Shane Bradford and Michael Marra. Born in Kent, England, Soni received her degree from the Chelsea College of Art and Design, in London.

Founded in 2003, Voltz Clarke Contemporary Inc. is an art consulting and curatorial company based in New York City. The company’s focus is garnering exposure for contemporary artists, as well as introducing international artists to the American market through public exhibitions and private consultation. Principal Blair Clarke was formerly a show director with Sanford L. Smith and Associates and an associate at the Forum Gallery, both in New York, and the director of Galerie Timothy Tew, in Atlanta. Believing one should cast a wide net to identify new talent, Clarke is intrigued by the rich diversity of work found in unexpected places. Voltz Clarke LLC maintains a roster of international artists. Works are available for viewing by private appointment or online at www.voltzclarke.com. (New York, NY) December 12, 2005: Up-and-coming artists from both across the pond and around the corner headline Blair Clarke’s exhibition, London Bridges. The show brings the work of two young artists from England to the United States, and introduces a native New Yorker to the gallery world. Blair Clarke, president and founder of Voltz Clarke, says, “I am thrilled to expose the work of these young artists and offer a glimpse of the innovations coming from both sides of the Atlantic.”

Born in Kent, England, in 1973, Lucy Soni attained a BA with honors in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art in London. Inspired by her 18-month-old daughter, Ella, Soni recently began rendering her child’s naïve scribbles into abstract drawings and paintings. The artist is interested in the relationship between an infant’s uninhibited marks and the abstract genre-by tracing and defining her daughter’s scrawls, Soni explores the friction between Ella’s childhood expression and Lucy’s maternal control. This process for Soni started with colored pencils on paper and developed into a series of large-scale oil canvases, which Voltz Clarke has been tracking for the past two years.

Shane Bradford, the show’s other English artist, is known for his “dipping” process, whereby various objects are repeatedly dipped in multi-colored emulsions. Recently Bradford’s art has broadened to encompass large-scale oil painting, three-dimensional objects and installation work with televisions. The humor in his work is supported by a complex and challenging balance of socio-political narrative and creative wanderlust. Created as a response to his surroundings, Bradford’s work celebrates the neon urban aesthetic while reconciling its commercial content. Recent acclaim at London’s Zoo Art Fair makes way for a major European solo exhibition of new works in 2006.

American mixed media artist Michael Marra is a graduate of Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute. Among the works he is presenting in London Bridges are a lighting installation and “Magic Carpet,” a rug that is sculpted into a seat. “It is important to me that my work has an element of discovery,” says Marra. “Sometimes this is achieved by exploring new and often unlikely materials to create something original, or by simply rethinking the relationships between two objects and the space they occupy.”

Voltz Clarke‘s mission is focused on building exposure for international contemporary artists through private consultation and public exhibition. Maintaining a roster of 10 to 12 artists, the company’s founder, Blair Clarke, works directly with all of her artists. Her goal is to exhibit their works to the largest possible audience, including online, in her private midtown salon and in galleries for the greater public.
